We believe dance is a high-level artistic discipline grounded in self-respect, academic strength, and community integrity. At Ja’LUUM, professionalism is not a set of rigid rules—it is how we honor our time, our bodies, and each other. We cultivate well-rounded scholar-artists who bring curiosity to rehearsal, hold themselves to high standards in and out of the studio, and lift up the ensemble through unity, dedication, and mutual respect.
Holistic Excellence & Self-Care We believe that true artistry begins with how dancers treat themselves and each other. This process starts from within. Dancers build self-worth through self-advocacy, body maintenance, open communication, and physical awareness. We encourage students to be in tune with themselves and learn integral self-reflection, preservation, and love habits that will build long-term sustainability and success.
Cultivating a Supportive EnsembleJa’LUUM is built on kindness and professional courtesy toward instructors, peers, guest artists, and production crews. We foster a positive space where every artist feels seen, respected, and safe to take creative risks. Bullying or exclusionary behavior has no place here.
When we perform, individual expression merges into ensemble unity. Adhering to technical dress codes, safety guidelines, and director’s vision ensures the safety, cohesion, and professional impact of our company.
Professionalism & Mindful PracticeStudio etiquette is an expression of respect for the ensemble. Arriving early, dressing for movement safety and alignment, silencing distractions, and keeping a dedicated dance notebook reflect a dancer's reverence for the space and process. Dancers learn to trust the process, embrace constructive feedback, and take personal ownership of their choreography and progress when these personal practices are in place. Ja’LUUM’s intention is to help each dancer acquire skills that will benefit them in and out of the dance studio.
The Scholar-Artist ModelWe cultivate young artists who lead with integrity both inside and outside the studio. Maintaining academic strength (3.3 GPA minimum) and behaving as positive ambassadors in school and community settings reflect the discipline and maturity of a Ja’LUUM dancer. Ja’LUUM creates the space for artists to find their balance between their artistic and scholarly studies.
Attendance & Absence Policy At Ja’LUUM, consistency, dedication, and active participation are essential to both individual artist development and the collective growth of the ensemble. Because our rehearsal process is highly collaborative and fast-paced, regular attendance is expected of all dancers.
Absence Allowance: Dancers are allowed a maximum of two (2) absences per season.
Extenuating Circumstances: We recognize that unforeseen situations occur. Exceptions to the two-absence limit may be made for extenuating circumstances, including family emergencies, illness, or injury.
Communication & Discussion: Open communication is key. Dancers/guardians must notify Ja’LUUM leadership as far in advance as possible regarding any prospective conflicts or active emergencies via our Rehearsal Conflict Form or by emailing info@jaluum.org.
Note: Unexcused absences or exceeding the two-absence limit without prior communication and approval may result in a review of the dancer's role in upcoming performances or company standing.
