Sicily Maria Mwanabaraka Reizeck
I began my dance training at the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts at age two, studying ballet with Ms. Niki, hip hop with Mr. D and Tarik Rollerson, and African dance with Ms. Carter and later Ms. Betty. My pre-professional training continued with the Urban Ballet Company at age 10 under Ms. Miya Hisaka. I later trained at Berkeley Ballet Theater and spent a significant portion of my life training at the Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) under Mr. Savage and Ms. Hurley. My current training regimen at OSA includes instruction from Ms. Natalya, Ms. Mari, Ms. Ebony, and Mr. AJ, in addition to my ongoing work with D2D and Ja’LUUM.
I love dance because it provides a powerful avenue for self-expression through movement. It is an art form that offers constant challenges; the work is never truly done, and I appreciate the dedication required for continuous improvement. Ja’LUUM has been particularly instrumental in my development, offering a space to explore unique ways of expression and encouraging me to think outside the boundaries of mainstream dance perspectives.
My future plan is to continue dancing through college, pursuing my passion for performing and professional work within the dance world.
